Future-ready packaging
For fresh produce, packaging has to fulfil several functions. It must protect delicate products, support food safety and preserve quality, while using materials as efficiently as possible. Reducing packaging is therefore not simply about using less material, but about finding the right balance between product protection and circularity.
At Special Fruit, we are actively preparing for the PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) together with our suppliers, packaging partners and customers. We are:
- mapping the packaging formats used across our product range;
- collecting more detailed information about materials, composition and weight;
- requesting supporting documentation from suppliers;
- exploring lighter, recyclable and mono-material alternatives;
- assessing how packaging can be improved without compromising product quality or food safety.
Many technical requirements will continue to develop over the coming years. Reliable data and close collaboration throughout the supply chain will therefore be essential.
By starting this work now, we aim to help our customers prepare for the transition, reduce compliance risks and identify practical packaging improvements. For Special Fruit, the PPWR is not only a regulatory obligation. It is also an opportunity to build a more transparent, efficient and future-ready fresh produce supply chain.
