SBTi x Healthy Future

SBTi x Healthy Future

At Special Fruit, we believe that healthy food starts with a healthy planet. That is why we have joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reduce our emissions in line with the latest climate science.

This step is an essential part of our Healthy Future strategy: our compass for sustainable business, in which we structurally integrate health, the environment and social responsibility into our way of working.

We bring avocados, asparagus, berries and other fresh produce from all over the world to customers across Europe. But the food chain – including ours – contributes to climate change. We want to change that.

What does this mean in concrete terms?

We have officially committed to setting science-based targets Initiative. This is not just a vague promise, but a phased approach that we will implement step by step over the coming years.

Mapping emissions

We have started mapping our total emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) so that we know where we stand and where we can make a difference.

Setting targets

Based on these measurements, we are formulating short- and long-term climate targets in line with the 1.5°C scenario. These targets will be submitted to the SBTi for validation.

Actions in progress

We are already taking various steps:

  • Further electrification of our vehicle fleet in Belgium, with Spain in preparation.
  • A supplier strategy to reduce emissions in our chain (Scope 3).
  • A framework for CO₂ reduction in transport and logistics.
  • A stricter policy against deforestation in our supply chain.

Transparency

Once approved by the SBTi, we will publish our targets and report annually on our progress.

Collaboration

Real change can only be achieved together. That is why we actively involve our growers, suppliers and partners in this ambition and encourage them to set science-based targets as well.
